ONCODIR advances digital innovation for colorectal cancer prevention at its 6th Plenary Meeting in Lithuania

From 20 to 22 October 2026, the ONCODIR project held its sixth plenary meeting in Kaunas, Lithuania, hosted by the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU). The meeting brought together consortium partners to review the project’s progress, discuss the final stages of implementation and explore the future application of its innovative solutions for colorectal cancer prevention.

Funded under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme and contributing to the objectives of the EU Mission on Cancer, ONCODIR aims to develop personalised, data-driven approaches to colorectal cancer prevention by combining scientific research, advanced digital technologies and user-centred solutions.

Advancing personalised cancer prevention through digital innovation

During the three-day meeting, partners reviewed progress across the project’s working groups and discussed the outcomes of pilot studies conducted in Greece and Romania, alongside ongoing pilot activities in Lithuania.

A key focus was the demonstration and testing of the digital tools developed within the project for three main user groups: the general public, healthcare professionals and health policymakers. Through practical sessions and workshops, participants explored the potential of these solutions and provided feedback to help assess their usability and alignment with users’ needs.

By integrating artificial intelligence and digital technologies into prevention strategies, ONCODIR seeks to support personalised recommendations, inform decision-making and strengthen efforts to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

Strengthening European research collaboration

The meeting also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in translating scientific advances into practical solutions. Prof. Dr Juozas Kupčinskas, Vice-Rector for Research at LSMU and ONCODIR project leader at the University, emphasised the role of international research partnerships in advancing colorectal cancer prevention and improving long-term patient outcomes.

Dr Athanasios Mavropoulos, Deputy Coordinator of ONCODIR, underlined the importance of presenting the project’s achievements to a wider audience and gathering feedback beyond the consortium itself. This exchange will help identify areas for improvement and guide the further development and application of the tools.

Looking ahead

As the project approaches its final stages, partners discussed the evaluation of its results and opportunities to ensure the long-term uptake of the solutions developed. The meeting marked an important step towards translating research and technological innovation into practical approaches that can support more effective colorectal cancer prevention.

Through its collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, ONCODIR contributes to the broader European effort to strengthen cancer prevention and bring innovation closer to citizens, healthcare systems and policymakers.
