EUREGHA has joined forces with leading health stakeholders to address critical challenges facing Europe’s health research landscape. In this joint statement, we highlight the need to protect and effectively fund health research and innovation in the next European Framework Programme (FP10). With increasing challenges straining Europe’s health systems, effectively funding health research and innovation should remain a key focus within the next Framework Programme.
The joint statement outlines recommendations on priority areas of focus and advances six recommendations to bolster the effectiveness and impact of the FP10 and strengthen the world-class EU (health) research and innovation ecosystem. The recommendations include safeguarding dedicated health funding and maintaining a stand-alone research programme, as well as streamlining administrative processes to reduce barriers for applicants. Additionally, the joint statement advocates for balancing basic and applied research to make advancements while at the same time ensuring implementation and maximise the impact for patients, healthcare professionals, and health systems.
The statement also stressed the importance of supporting collaborative research between public and private partners, enhancing stakeholder engagement to bridge the science-industry-society gap, and promoting excellence to attract and retain talent in the European R&I ecosystem.
These measures are essential for equipping European health systems to tackle public health emergencies, increase resilience to climate-related risks, address long-term challenges such as non-communicable diseases, and alleviate strains on the health and care workforce.
