Not ensuring mental health promotion early on can place a great burden on both the individual and the overall society. Social and emotional skills are therefore an important part of mental health promotion and schools have a fundamental role to play. Academic research shows that that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programmes help children and have long-term results on the social wellbeing and academic achievements of children. It has also been demonstrated that students exposed to SEL activities feel safer and more connected to schools. Moreover\, they build good working habits\, social skills and stronger relationships with peers and teachers. All these factors contribute to the promotion of mental wellbeing in the young. \nHowever\, several shortcomings have been identified in using these programmes\, which may compromise their sustainability and long-term effects. \nAgainst this background\, the Horizon 2020 BOOST project aims to create an innovative approach to strengthen social and emotional skills among children and young people in school\, as to promote mental health and wellbeing. The overall aim of this project is to develop\, implement\, and test a new SEL-based population approach to promote mental health and wellbeing in primary school children. \nCOVID-19 has reshuffled the lives of many people and the effect on young children’s wellbeing should not be forgotten. As it is time to re-discuss the importance of SEL programmes and the overall wellbeing of young children\, the BOOST consortium released a policy brief on the systematic work with policies to promote mental wellbeing among children in schools. The brief summarises some of the preliminary findings and lessons learned from the EU H2020 project BOOST. DESCRIPTION:The  EUREGHA Annual conference \n“Exploring regional cross-border cooperation in health:Current practices and future outlooks“\nwill conclude EUREGHA’s ongoing policy cycle on cross-border cooperation in health. It will take place on the 6th of December 2017 13h00-17h30 at the Welsh Government EU Office (Rond-Point Schuman 11) in Brussels. \nThe conference will gather EUREGHA Member regions\, European health networks\, representatives from EU institutions  and other stakeholders to: \n\nDISCUSS  key elements and strategies that leads to successful cross-border cooperation in health\, as well as how we can assure long lasting and institutionalized health cooperation in border regions\, by\nEXPLORING regional and local good practices and challenges on cross-border cooperation in health\, and how to transpose these solutions to other borders\, and\nFOCUSING on future outlooks of European health cooperation and distinguish future opportunities for regional cross-border cooperation in health.\n\nThe conference starts at 13h00. SUMMARY:EUREGHA morning seminar “Mental health in the young: good practices and new initiatives”
DESCRIPTION:In light of EUREGHA policy cycle on Mental Health\, we are happy to invite you to the EUREGHA morning seminar focusing on Mental health in the young on 27 April\, 9h30-11h45\, at the Skåne European Office\, Rue du Luxembourg 3\, 1000 Brussels. \nAccording to WHO\, 10-20% of children and young adults experience mental illnesses worldwide. Half of all mental disorders begin before they reach the age of 14 and three-quarters develop by mid-20s. If left untreated\, these conditions have a great impact on children’s development\, including their educational achievements and a potential to live fulfilling lives. DESCRIPTION:The Annual EUREGHA High Level Conference will be organised in Brussels on 11 December. This year the theme will be “Linking Chronic Diseases and Frailty; Creating Synergies and Collaboration between Efficient Policies for Disease Prevention and Management at European and Subnational Level”. We are delighted to announce that the introductory remarks will be given by Mr Xavier Prats Monné\, Director-General\, European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE). \nWith chronic diseases being the main cause of death in Europe\, affecting more than 80% of people aged over 65\, and frailty being intimately linked to the ageing population and chronic diseases\, the conference aims to discuss the links between frailty and chronic diseases. We also wish to highlight concrete tools and strategies available to promote the prevention and management of chronic diseases and/or frailty at European\, regional and local level. \nBesides Mr Prats Monné\, the confirmed speakers also include Prof Jan de Maeseneer\, Chair of the European Commission’s Expert Panel on Effective Ways of Investing in Health\, and Prof Matteo Cesari\, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Frailty and Ageing. \nFor more information on the conference\, please contact the EUREGHA Secretariat on secretariat@euregha.net. \n
