On the 5th February, EUREGHA organised at the Committee of Regions its General Assmbly entitled “Increasing the role of European regional and local health authorities in the European Union: together we can make it happen”. The seminar brought together representatives and health experts from all over Europe into one meeting covering various issues related to the role, challenges and expectations of public health authorities in pursuing better health. |

The Czech Health Priorities: what's at stake |

On the 15th January 2009, EUREGHA together with Zlin and Olomouc Regions organised a meeting at the Czech House to explore the Health Agenda of the Czech Presidency of the European Council, which overtook the French Presidency on the 1st January 2009 for the next 6 months. After having outlined the common objectives of the Trio-presidency compounded by France, Czech Republic and Sweden, Mrs Faltysova, Czech Health Attaché, focused on the goals specifically set by the Czech Presidency. Opportunities of collaboration between the Presidency and Regions were also explored during the debate. |

A public consultation on the future of Europe's workforce for health is launched |

The European Commission adopted a green paper on the EU workforce for health. This marks the beginning of a consultation period which aims to identify common responses to the many challenges facing the health workforce in Europe. The aim of the green paper is to launch a debate on how best to tackle the challenges facing the health workforce in Europe and to engage stakeholders in discussion. The green paper describes the 'workforce for health' as all people engaged in the planning and delivery of health services including health promotion. |

The Commission tables the pharmaceutical package |

The EU has been losing ground in pharmaceutical innovation. European patients still suffer from inequalities in the availability of information about medicines, whilst counterfeits are on the rise. To address these challenges, the Commission has tabled a package, consisting of four key parts: 1. A communication to launch reflections on ways to improve market access and to develop initiatives to boost EU pharmaceutical research. 2. A proposal to tackle the growing issues of counterfeiting and illegal distribution of medicines, 3. Proposals to enable citizens to have access to high-quality information on prescription-only medicines and 4. Proposals to improve patient protection by strengthening the EU system for the safety monitoring, the so-called pharmacovigilance of medicines.
