EUREGHA responds to the Commission's consultation paper on health inequalities |

The European Commission has recently published a consultation paper focusing on the EU action to reduce health inequalities. The consultation will pave the way for a Commission Communication aiming to support the reduction of health inequalities in the EU. With the intent of stressing "health" as a necessary pre-condition of territorial cohesion, EUREGHA drafted a response to put forward the perspective of regional and local authorities on this sensitive matter.

Discovery of a promising drug against tuberculosis |

The European Commission research funding programmes have been supporting research on this vital disease for many years. On 19 March 2009, one EU-funded project, 'New Medicines for Tuberculosis', announced the discovery of a new drug candidate, showing promising prospects for fighting not only Tuberculosis (TB), but also for combating the Extensively Drug Resistant form of the disease. |

The Commission launches its Annual Policy Strategy |

The Commission has presented its Annual Policy Strategy which paves the way for establishing a policy agenda for 2010. While ensuring the continuity of the institution’s strategic planning system, the Annual Policy Strategy takes account of the fact that a new Commission will be in office in 2010. The Annual Policy Strategy (APS) is the first step of the Commission's planning system. It aims to launch the interinstitutional dialogue on the priorities for next year and to prepare for the Preliminary Draft Budget which the Commission will be presenting in April. Four key areas are pointed out as priority, namely: economic and social recovery, climate change and sustainable Europe, the centrality of EU citizens, and the role of Europe as a world partner. Health-related issues are transversal to the themes. |
